Crankworx Red Bull Joy Ride Preview
Posted: Wednesday, August 13, 2014
Crankworx main event kicks off this Saturday, August 16th. The event has always been the main staple of the mountain bike festival - kinda like the 100 meter dash of the summer games! Whenever the Red Bull Joy Ride is about to take begin everyone in Whistler stops and takes notice.
The event's takes place at the base of Whistler Mountain / Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Skiers Plaza which sits at the bottom of the bike course will turn into Joy Ride headquarters with thousands of boisterous fans gathering to cheer on the riders.
During the event the world's best freestyle mountain bikers collide in one of the biggest freeride competitions of the year. The event fuses together elements of slopestyle, dirt jump and classic downhill riding. Riders will start off at the top of the Joy Ride course with one thought 'go big or go home'. The course is littered with jumps, ramps and step-ups in which each athlete must create a run of their best freestyle tricks. Expect big flips, tail whips, spins, inverts and more!
The format for the event is simple. Each rider is given three runs, each run is scored on technicality, air height and style. The riders best run will count as their final score, with the highest run taking the crown. Athletes will be positioned from worst to first coming out of qualification. Meaning the rider with the highest qualifying score will run last in the finals. Giving them the opportunity to know what scores they have to beat.
Last year's winner was none other than Whistler local Brandon Semenuk. Check out this awesome video of Brandon discussing last year's win and his drive to go for the threepete this year.
The Red Bull Joy Ride takes place from 4:30PM - 7PM at the base of Whistler Mountain (Whistler Mountain Bike Park).
